An International Ice Climbing Event in the Heart of Colorado’s San Juan Mountains
Ouray, Colorado is such a special place to live, work, and recreate. Every January in Ouray Colorado, the world-renowned Ouray Ice Festival and Competition happens! Ice Climbers from all over the world visit the small quaint town in the heart of the San Juan Mountains to climb frozen ice created and groomed by the ice farmers of Ouray.
In 2022, with my press pass in hand, I got to film the ice climbers of this international competition. I was able to film from the upper level of the spectator bridges and various views from the many different ice climbing routes. I especially enjoyed capturing this competition from the bottom of the gorge where the climbers start.
Ice Climbing for Winter Family Fun
Ouray Ice Park and Festival also offer a “kids” wall with local guides teaching the youngsters or the newbies how to feel the excitement of ice climbing. With clinics provided and climbing gear to test out before you invest, this is a fantastic opportunity to get your crampons on the ICE. Just weeks after the nearby event, Ridgway Skijoring, Ouray’s annual Ice Festival goes directly to funding the operational cost of the Ouray Ice Park so that they can continue to build world-class ice climbing event every year. With climate changes and warmer temperatures, it becomes harder and harder every year to maintain this park. Financed only by visitors’ donations, consider adding this unique event to your “must do” list for winter adventures!
